Honduras - A Country in Transition

Miguel Angel, 17, lies on his deathbed at his parents home in San Juan, Honduras. Miguel suffered a gun shot wound through his side at the Honduras/Guatemala border when trying to make his way illegally to the United States. With a collapsed lung and few medical options, Miguel is surrounded by his 4 siblings at hi parents humble home in San Juan, Honduras a town known for drugs and gangs. Honduras is considered the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (Haiti, Nicaragua). With over 50% of the population living below the poverty line and 28% unemployed, Hondurans frequently turn to illegal immigration as a solution to their desperate situation. The Department of Homeland Security has noted an 95% increase in illegal immigrants coming from Honduras between 2000 and 2009, the largest increase of any country.
