After Ireland and Greece, Portugal became the third country, among others to follow, which sought help from an international bailout fund. The years to follow would bring further implementation of foreign creditors' demands for severe austerity policies. The result has been staggering unemployment, rising taxes, economic depression, unprecedented poverty and emigration levels only comparable to those during Oliveira Salazar's fascist dictatorship years.
