Honduras is considered the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (Haiti, Nicaragua). With over 50% of the population living below the poverty line and 28% unemployed, Hondurans frequently turn to illegal immigration as a solution to their desperate situation. The Department of Homeland Security has noted an 95% increase in illegal immigrants coming from Honduras between 2000 and 2009, the largest increase of any country.

On "Fat Tuesday" the Compadres and Comadres appear in public, and begin to read the testaments. These are rhyming verses of verbal battles between the sexes. They are full of innuendoes, jokes and naughtiness. After these are read, the effigies are burned and the parade goes on to the main square where the grand finale will take place. The party then finishes with bean stew, soup and wine.

  • Sunday is the big market day in Chichicastanango with folks from all over the region bringing their goods to sell in the market that takes up all of downtown.  An incredible amount of color and tradition line the small streets as people make their way through.  On the steps of the Santo Tomas church women sell flowers while others burn incesnce at the entrance to the church.
