  • The cemetery of the Queimada dos Britos, where most of old residents are buried.  It is one of the reasons why the locals don't want to leave the oasis.   The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA) is planning to remove them since they live in a National Park. The residents refuse to move since many of them were born there and lived all their lives in the Queimada. They claim that more than a threat, they are a protection to the Lençois do Maranhão.

  • Debris left behind when the dunes swollen one the houses in Queimado dos Britos. After the resident lost the house for the dunes he decided to move to the nearby city of Santo Amaro. During the summer, the lack of water and the strong winds make the dunes advance and take over parts of the oasis. But not only their life is threaten by the tourism and the sand. The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA) is planning to remove them since they live in a National Park. The residents refuse to move since many of them were born there and lived all their lives in the Queimada. They claim that more than a threat they are a protection to the Lençois do Maranhão.

Residents claim that the aerial pulverizations are one of the many causes for the cases of cancer grow exponentially in the area since the introduction of glyphosate on the soya cultivation. 26,000,000 Liters of pesticides are sprayed in Argentina - which per hectare is ten times more than in the USA. Nowadays many tourists come to visit to see its famous street art and the iconic electric stairscases that facilitate the mobility of the residents up and down the hill.   • 2014/11/17 - Monte Maiz, Argentina: Residents of Monte Maiz gather at the Pensioners Center to discuss with an agronomist the potential effects that agro-chemicals can have on public health. The cases of cancer grew exponentially in the area since the introduction of glyphosate on the soy cultivation. 707 <br />
Cancer cases per 100,000 pepople were register by health researchers in the core area of soybean cultivation. These are three times as many  as the national average. (Eduardo Leal)

Honduras is considered the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (Haiti, Nicaragua). With over 50% of the population living below the poverty line and 28% unemployed, Hondurans frequently turn to illegal immigration as a solution to their desperate situation. The Department of Homeland Security has noted an 95% increase in illegal immigrants coming from Honduras between 2000 and 2009, the largest increase of any country.
